Overview

The Director of Architecture is ultimately accountable and responsible for the design, architectural drawings and permitting of all projects designed in house. For projects designed with outside architects, the Director of Architecture will need to be involved to monitor and potentially contribute for consistency and assurance that the firm's best practices are followed. The Director of Architecture is responsible for managing and coaching the Design Team while ensuring their performance and work product. The Director of Architecture and Design Team work closely with the Sales Team as they move clients through the design process and into construction.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct, manage and lead the Design Team to produce successful solutions.
  • Work in partnership with the Sales Team to create the best sales/design experience for our clients in the shortest amount of time.
  • Engage with clients to understand their needs and provide design/build solutions that transform their “houses into homes.”
  • Work with Project Leader (PL) to create as-built drawings, schematic design drawings, design and development drawings, construction document and permit drawings.
  • Possible professional engineering review if required.
  • CAD drawings or hand drawings as appropriate.
  • Understanding of zoning laws, environmental factors and structural issues.
  • Work with PL as required to complete selections work, including managing to the budget.
    • Research latest design trends (materials, finishes, fixtures, appliances, etc.).
    • Work with client, including showroom visits, providing samples, etc.
  • Work with the Production Team as required to incorporate current construction techniques and value engineering as an integral part of the Design/Build process.
  • Design Standards and Best Practices:
    • Create, maintain, enhance, update and train team while relating to design standards and best practices.
  • Drive design efficiency within the Design Team by evaluating software and assigning/amending workflow.
  • Allocate resource management effectively and timely; i.e. assign designers when exceptions occur, finalizing and approving the Design Department Requests.
  • Support Sales Team with Design function and presentations.
    • Provide support through PL individual Lead Generating Activity (LGA) goals and Sales Team or other employees’ LGA goals - authority marketing, video series, design blogs, technology that would help our clients share with their network.
    • Team Selling – run leads with PL’s on appropriate opportunities.
    • Develop drawings/presentations during the sales cycle that help move the client forward in sales process.
  • Source and develop technology solutions for sales presentations and client meetings as well as efficiencies within the Design Team such as 3D Renderings.
    • Sketch up/Oculus
  • Drafting responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Redlining work from designers for quality control and to identify training topics.
    • Drawing or modeling for sales presentations or early concepts.
  • Ultimately accountable and responsible for the quality & accuracy of all plans created by the Design Team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in Architecture or Related Field
  • Proven Experience in Residential Design Build Architecture
  • Architectural License
  • Knowledge of local and national building codes, and DMV permitting process
  • Strong ability to build relationships (internal and external), effectively communicate and positively influence direct reports, coworkers and clients
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities; experienced and creative problem solver
  • Strong project management and organizational skills; demonstrated track record for flexibility along with a high level of attention to detail
  • Proficient in Architectural Software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit
