SOME (So Others Might Eat) exists to help the homeless and poor of Washington, DC. With over 30 programs throughout DC, we provide a wide spectrum of services to the most vulnerable individuals and families of our city. Our social services address mental health, addiction, and the special needs of vulnerable seniors in our community, and help connect people with the services they need to improve their lives.


SOME (So Others Might Eat) is seeking a full-time Director, Marketing and Communications to support SOME (So Others Might Eat).

Position Description: The Director of Marketing and Communications will be part of a dynamic, 3-person communications department and lead the development of the annual communications + marketing plan and all activities that enhance SOME's reputation and brand image. Reporting to the SVP, Chief Business Development Officer, the Director will support and drive the effectiveness of companywide communications and engagement strategies through internal and external channels, including public relations campaigns, content, and social media. This position is accountable for controlling and overseeing the flow of communication and information between SOME and the public. The Director will also oversee cross-functional teams in implementing programs and developing content, including press releases, web content, talking points, and presentations. This individual will also play a key role in coaching executives on media and speaking opportunities and serve as a spokesperson when required. The ideal candidate is both a team player and self-starter and can come up with creative, innovative ideas to inform and inspire the media, donors, and clients; skillfully manage and assist executives with external speaking opportunities; and get in the trenches to execute plans and make things happen.

Communications and Marketing Management

Create annual and programmatic strategy + editorial calendar that aligns with SOME's business objectives and helps drive growth. Working in partnership across all of SOME's internal departments to ensure consistent and strategic messaging and branding. Adept at drafting press releases, statements, speeches, and other materials related to SOME's events and programs. Proven ability to plan, execute and analyze the performance of social media metrics and SEO. Demonstrated experience creating strategies to increase followers and drive traffic. Develop and implement robust media relations efforts to support SOME's mission and increase brand awareness. Contribute as a key member of the Crisis Communications and Emergency Preparedness team, managing and responding to crises or challenging situations quickly and professionally. Manage the development and maintenance of SOME's website (WordPress CMS), including methods to deliver message and clarity of information; ensure that all content is current, relevant, and consistent with the brand. Serve as the internal project manager for external vendors as it relates to key strategic initiatives, including the launch and successful completion of SOME's FY22 website redesign. Cultivate relationships with reporters and pitch stories to targeted media contacts to promote SOME's initiatives and events. Collaborate cross-functionally across SOME to develop content about programs, initiatives, funding and volunteer opportunities, key policy, and economic issues. Monitor regional issues and opportunities and stay informed on all matters impacting SOME's operations, mission, and clients. Contribute to strategy development and strive to improve department functions and performance; Assist in the development of standards and goals as appropriate. Acts as SOME spokesperson and responds to members of the media in a timely manner; composes and distributes press releases as needed. Develop communications goals and work with team members to develop and meet individual goals. Responsible for maintaining team cohesion and comradery, informing them of changing business priorities, and sharing team point of view with senior management & contributing to the creation of the Marketing and Communications' annual budget; Administer the budget and comply with SOME financial reporting requirements



Ensure appropriate department staffing levels in order to meet objectives; Assess, evaluate, and hire new employees as needed. Contribute to department budget development, and use sound judgment to leverage resources in accomplishing department goals; Administer the budget and comply with SOME financial reporting requirements. Contribute to strategy development and strive to improve department functions and performance; Assist in the development of standards and goals as appropriate. Submit supervisory and administrative paperwork to Human Resources and Finance, as required; Refer to SOME Employee Handbook for policy guidance. Maintain professional documentation and ensure the program is in compliance with SOME CQI standards. Ensure compliance with all state, local, and federal laws governing the workplace and all department functions. Schedule staff work hours, as needed, and monitor for time and attendance; Approve time cards and requests for leave. Provide direction and guidance to staff members on department operations and procedures. Define work requirements, assign tasks to staff members, and review work for quality and accuracy; Coordinate with Human Resources to update job descriptions as needed. Provide regular feedback on performance, monitor individual performance, conduct performance evaluations, and take steps for performance improvement as needed. Provide coaching and training for staff, assist staff with work processes and policies, and encourage opportunities for professional development.


Additional Requirments

Participates in required training and development activities. Fully cooperates with the organization's compliance and continuous quality improvement (CQI) program. Creates a safe work environment and uses sound judgment in interactions with clients and staff to maintain safety. Performs other related duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Communications, Marketing, Journalism or a related discipline
  • 5+ yrs. experience in Marketing/Public Relations, of which at least 2 are in a managerial capacity.
  • 15 years of direct professional experience will be considered in lieu of a bachelor's degree.



  • Bi-lingual in Spanish and English


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Superior writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Creative visual storyteller. Inquisitive. Strong executive presence and skilled at critical thinking, ability, and confidence to advise senior managers and problem solve, to shape communications strategies and plans
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with multiple and competing priorities while maintaining a strong focus on execution and results
  • Track record of high-touch stakeholder engagement & building relationships with cross-functional teams
  • Extensive experience with advising executives in communications and reputation management
  • Ability to show visual communications and writing samples across a variety of communications channels
  • Proficient with Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • Event planning skills/experience preferred
  • Ability to identify and analyze business and audience needs to deliver messages via the most appropriate mix of channels
